Acne Studios brings futuristic design to handcrafted pieces for new collection

Implementing design houses’ typically experimental approach to the subject of personal identity, Acne Studios presented a collection that fuses historically inspired pieces with futuristic design ideals for its new Spring / Summer 2022 collection.

His experimentation involved the combination of four underlying themes that each play with contrasting materials and techniques. These include chiffon and leather, plaid and lingerie, retouched knits and limit-pushing corsets.

“We live in the age of personal identity, instinct and experimentation,” Jonny Johansson, creative director of Acne Studios, said in a statement. “The look is provocative and harsh, but is based on handcrafted items which are then subverted.”

Subtle colors hinted at the transition of the seasons, with fall hues of browns, beiges and creams topping, sometimes clashing with brighter greens and blues at brief intervals for a welcome contrast.

Chiffon shirts and printed maxi dresses stood nicely next to structured, fitted leather pieces. Patchwork mini-dresses and detailed trench coats have formed deliberately irregular leather patterns, implementing lace-up features that mirror those of their more flowing counterparts.

Corsets played an important role in the collection, some designed with Baroque floral designs, reminiscent of medieval-style clothing with futuristic touches. Traditionally handmade designs have been reappropriated for modern times, keeping their shape uniquely free from bodily constriction. They were styled in deconstructed skirts, frayed knits, and sheer draped dresses, giving the story-rich garment new life and purpose.

Other references to the past have come in the form of longjohn-inspired pants in an understated plaid design, a pattern also implemented in the paneled tops and skirts to contrast with their mesh base. Other aspects of the lingerie influences were shown in the suspender socks, created with elements of corset lacing.

Hand-knitted and crocheted pieces were also very evident throughout the line, with diamond-stitched items and raw techniques generating other jagged looks. A number of knitted coordinates graced the runway, in simplistic color schemes that guided the emphasis on their silhouette enhancing shapes.
