At Pack Expo, TekniPlex Healthcare will showcase the world’s first fully transparent recyclable intermediate barrier blister packaging
Mechanical recyclability certified by third-party testing, the company’s recyclable polyolefin blister packaging with barrier PP lid is a first in the healthcare industry; TekniPlex Healthcare will also offer reinforced, light weight coated paper for medical device applications.
Wayne, PA – TekniPlex Healthcare, which uses advanced materials science expertise to help deliver better patient outcomes, will launch the world’s first fully transparent recyclable intermediate barrier blister packaging at Pack Expo, October 23-26 in Chicago. . At booth W-13043, the company will showcase samples of its new breakthrough in materials science, which includes a moisture barrier.
Recyclable in geographies where recycle stream #5 (polypropylene) is available, intermediate barrier blister packs feature a polyolefin blister film combined with a PP barrier lidding film. This is the first time that a formed blister + lid combination has been certified as recyclable – a significant step in the evolution of efforts to make healthcare packaging more sustainable. From a manufacturing perspective, initial machinability analyzes are positive, with full-scale testing planned for the near future.
In addition to launching the mid-range barrier version at Pack Expo, TekniPlex Healthcare will also premiere a fully recyclable polyester mono-material blister + lid combination, suitable for products that do not require barrier protection.
“The ability to make transparent barrier blister packaging recyclable is a critical step towards circularity in healthcare materials, one in which technical challenges had to be overcome through extensive research, testing and dedication,” said Chris Qualters. , CEO of TekniPlex Healthcare. “We are exceptionally proud to be the first materials science company able to address this long-standing market need, and we look forward to showcasing the new blister packs at Pack Expo.”
Pack Expo will also mark the launch of TekniPlex Healthcare’s new reinforced coated light weight paper for the protection of medical devices. The company’s proprietary coating formulations and application technology result in rolls capable of meeting high performance and sterilization requirements. Reinforced coated papers are suitable for packaging a variety of common healthcare items, including syringes; tubing such as IVs, catheters, and airway filters; gauzes, sponges and bandages; and devices sterilized by EtO and radiation. Notably, the lightweight product has already received its first commercial order, from a major manufacturer of cotton swabs.
Fully recyclable blister packs and lower weight reinforced coated paper exemplify TekniPlex’s “Rethinking Responsibly” concept, which is committed to continuously thinking about what it means to provide responsible solutions to customers, their consumers and the planet. The approach reflects the company’s promise of perpetual progress in materials science design innovation, supply chain and operational efficiency, material reduction, closed-loop manufacturing and diversity materials, among other areas relevant to sustainability.
