Cape Town Opera performing at the Vineyard Hotel next week

From March 31 to April 3, 2022, CAPE TOWN OPERA in collaboration with The Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, will host four unique performances titled BON APPETIT! The amazing musical and culinary event will take place at the Restaurant and will delight foodies and opera lovers.

Award-winning chefs Mike Bassett and Evan Coosner have hosted a sumptuous five-course dinner where dishes will be accompanied by iconic food-focused opera songs. Think of Bernstein’s four recipes for voice and piano, Bach’s unique secular coffee cantata and a musical monologue by an American composer Lee Hoiby. ENJOY YOUR MEAL! will be under the musical direction of José Dias.

“When we decided to present a selection of food-themed operatic works,” said chef Mike, “I looked to the selected pieces for menu inspiration. In La Bonne Cuisine de Bernstein, you have recipes for Plum Pudding, Oxtail, and a quick cooked rabbit stew, among others. Then you have Bach’s Coffee Cantata, Bizet’s Omelet Quartet, Sextet Weill’s ice cream and Hoiby’s Bon Appétit!” Astute followers of the booklet will see the themes of each piece weave their way into the dishes on the menu: oxtail croquettes with mashed plums, a coffee martini, a rabbit roulade served with omelet rolls, a the pistachio with a milk pudding and finally, a chocolate cake. “This is an evening for adventurous diners who love opera and we are so looking forward to it!” he concluded.

With her team, Cape Town Opera Artistic Director Magdalene Minnaar, who began her tenure with the company earlier this year, has crafted several unique event offerings this year that are sure to captivate both fans seasoned opera and new audiences of all ages. Its new approach follows the company’s 2022 theme of diversity, sustainability and creativity. “In the post-Covid climate, we have to take care of the whole ecology of opera, and we are constantly exploring creative ways to serve audiences and expand our reach,” she said. “The only gift Covid has given us has been the opportunity to think about the box. We also want to present opera outside of the theater space in interesting locations and site-specific venues, and the Vineyard Hotel is a wonderful fit.”

The cast of six, performing just in front of the “show kitchen” which will be used as a stage space, includes the soprano Janelle Visagie, who received a prestigious Fleur du Cap Theater Award in 2015 for her role as Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music at Artscape and a Fleur du Cap as Elle in La Voix Humaine in 2019. She joins Ané Pretorius (Soprano), Jodie Khan (soprano), Siphesihle Mdena (tenor), Van Wyk Venter (baritone) and Garth Delport (bass). Janelle will play Lee HoibyIt’s Bon Appetit!

All tables will face the performance area. Seating is limited due to Covid restrictions, and advance booking is advised, especially as all Vineyard Hotel dinner-theatrical events are in high demand.
