GRAMMY winners Costanzo and Salvant make their SummerFest debut
Acclaimed countertenor, Anthony Roth Costanzo, and jazz sensation, Cécile McLorin Salvant, will make their debut at La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest as part of its Synergy initiative, the company has announced.

On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, multi-GRAMMY® winner Cécile McLorin Salvant Synergy under influence The concert will feature works from his new album, Ghost Song, which The New York Times called “the most revealing and rewarding album to date.” Salvant has a captivating passion for storytelling and weaves together jazz, blues, baroque and folk traditions from around the world.
It has received three GRAMMY® Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and a nomination for a fourth. In 2020, she received the MacArthur Fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award. For this concert, she will be joined by members of her quintet, Sullivan Fortner (piano), Marvin Sewell (guitar), Yasushi Nakamura (bass) and Keita Ogawa (percussion).
Thursday August 18 | Synergy: An Evening of Kurt Weill
Then, on Thursday, August 18, Salvant joins internationally acclaimed countertenor, Anthony Roth Costanzo, in An Evening of Kurt Weill: Seven Deadly Tricks, featuring and inspired by the music of Kurt Weill. The program will explore Weill’s songs alongside an eclectic group of composers ranging from Purcell, Poulenc and Schubert to Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and Kate Bush.
Costanzo became an international sensation and won a GRAMMY® for his portrayal of Pharaoh Akhnaton in the Philip Glass opera of the same name at the Metropolitan Opera. He is a recipient of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2020 Beverly Sills Award, winner of the 2020 Opera News Award, and 2019 Musical America Sill of the Year, among others.
An Evening of Kurt Weill is a newly conceived program directed by Zack Winokur, featuring members of the Knights with the SummerFest Chamber Ensemble and Sullivan Fortner on piano, conducted by Eric Jacobsen of the Knights.
La Jolla Music Society SummerFest “Under the Influence”
Both concerts take place at the beautiful Baker-Baum Concert Hall at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, California as part of SummerFest, the La Jolla Music Society’s annual festival featuring the world’s top chamber musicians. whole, as well as jazz and dance.
This year, Music Director Inon Barnatan has extended SummerFest to four weeks themed ‘Under the Influence’, exploring the muses, places and movements that have inspired the world’s greatest composers to create some of their finest works. .
Cécile McLorin’s concert Salvant and An Evening of Kurt Weill are presented as part of La Jolla Music Society’s Synergy Initiative, co-produced by Inon Barnatan and Clara Wu Tsai. These collaborators share a curiosity and passion for fascinating creators from across the cultural spectrum, and have designed the Synergy initiative to see what happens when these great artistic forces collide, creating a space that allows these creators to push back against limits and create experiences that challenge our preconceptions.

Single tickets for SummerFest are on sale now and range from $45 to $110.
SummerFest subscriptions are also available now. The Windansea Series—all 15 concerts in the Baker-Baum Concert Hall—costs $1,120 or $1,289 depending on seat location.
