What is an MMORPG? – Fossbytes
The world of video games is constantly changing, with new games every year; some fail to have a profound impact on fans, while others remain. The same goes for video game categories; some categories attract more people to them, while others stumble to get noticed. However, we are going to talk about a category of video games called MMORPGs and the best games in the category.
Although most MMORPGs differ slightly from the genre, they still fall into the category. MMORPGs are built with a special emphasis on character development, with a system of character progression.
What is an MMORPG?
A massively multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG combines aspects of two very different genres of video games, the RPG and the MMO. While MMOs are generally multiplayer games with many players interacting with each other. On the other hand, RPGs are designed to give players responsibility for the character of the story, making decisions based on dialogue.
While these two genres are generally based on the fantasy or sci-fi world, RPGs and MMOs combine to create an MMORPG, a perfect interpretation of both genres. The genre even has its own repertoire of gaming slang. For example, World of Warcraft is based on a fantasy world, Star Wars: The Old Republic is based on the Star Wars sci-fi movie series.
To give an example of an MMORPG, World of Warcraft is the most popular game of its kind. Additionally, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the fastest growing MMORPG in the first three days of its launch, with 1 million players.
While the genre has many games in its shroud, these are arguably the best MMORPGs;
- World of warcraft
- Guild wars
- Final fantasy 14
- Star Wars: The Old Republic
- Elder Scrolls Online
- Eve online
- New world
- Never winter
- Planet side
- Star Trek Online
